Bowen Therapy Explained

The Bowen technique is a non-invasive soft tissue therapy. Bowen moves are very gentle, and directly manipulate muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, joints and nerves. Bowen moves stimulate waves in the connective tissue, which sends messages to the rest of the body that trigger a holistic healing response, empowering the body to heal itself. Bowen Therapy may result in profound and permanent pain relief in and resolution of a wide range of conditions, even where other treatments have resulted in transient or little improvement. Bowen Therapy is safe for all ages, from the newborn babies to the elderly.

What does a Bowen Treatment involve?

Bowen treatments consist of sequences of small moves at varying pressures, each at specific sites on the body. The treatment is relaxing – therapists use light, cross-fibre manoeuvres over muscle, tendon or ligaments with no forceful manipulation.

A treatment will typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. During this time, the therapist may leave the room for periods of two to five minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves.

Each Bowen therapy session varies according to each clients needs. Subsequent treatments will be approximately 1 hour. Babies and children allow up to 1 hour.
Clients less than 18 need to be accompanied by an adult.

What problems can Bowen help resolve?

Helping to resolve pain and promote natural repair and healing, Bowen is known to help resolve a wide range of physical and/or emotional symptoms which may have come about due to recent, or old recurring injuries, stress, anxiety or other lifestyle pressures. A sense of wellbeing can be achieved, helping relaxation and aiding sleep. Bowen is known to help when other modalities have not been successful.

Who is Bowen suitable for?

It is safe for people of all ages - and physical conditions - from strong, fit adults, sportsmen and sportswomen to pregnant mums, babies, children, and even the elderly & frail.

What should I wear to my Bowen appointment?

Treatments can be done through a layer of light, loose fitted clothing, although clients may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments.
